In 1891, Tyldesley Swimming Club became one of the first clubs in the country to take up water polo. The Junior polo section is divided into three groups:   Group 1 (National Plan for Teaching Swimming Stage 8) concentrate on the basic water polo skills: head-up front  crawl, head-up backstroke, eggbeater, picking up the ball, swimming with the ball, long walking, long sculling, passing  & catching and shooting.   Group 2 (National Plan for Teaching Swimming Stages 9 & 10) further develop the basic skills and learn the core  water polo skills including: slope and tilt position, stopping and starting, changing direction, short walking & short  sculling, active blocking, jumping, jump half turn, spider, goalkeeping.    Group 3 further (16/Us & 14/Us teams) develop the basic and core skills and learn tactical skills eg setting up the arc,  man up etc.  Some of the Junior players also train at the Manchester Regional Training Centre.   For 2012 the Junior teams will compete in the following competitions: ASA Academy Girls National Water Polo Competition ASA North West 14s tournament Bolton & District 16/Us KO Bolton & District 12/Us KO Bolton & District 12/Us league Manchester & District 16/Us league Manchester & District 14/Us league Manchester & District 14/Us tournament Manchester & District 12/Us tournament Manchester & District Boys 18/Us tournament Manchester & District Girls 17s tournament Manchester & District Girls 15s tournament School Links Teachers: Mavis Bent, Paul Costello, Megan Price   Session Times: Wednesday 4.00 - 4.30 This session provides an introduction to water polo for local primary school children.  The club  provides the teachers and pays the pool hire fees.  Admission is free but children must be able to swim  1 length on their fronts and one length on their backs.  Children progress from this group to Junior  Water Polo Group 1. Click on pictures to enlarge The club also has school links with St Mary's High School, Astley and Fred Longworth High School,  Tyldesley providing coaches and training.  In 2011 St Mary's won the 2011 English Schools  Swimming Association (ESSA) Intermediate Girls Water Polo Competition.
