Proposed Pool Closure

Re-visioning

30/9/04

Various rumours are already circulating regarding the baths and the Club, and I feel it only right that members are aware of the facts.

On the 22nd September our Secretary received a letter requesting the officers of the Club to attend a meeting at the baths on the 23rd September.

Martin Eden a senior officer of Wigan Leisure Cuture Trust advised the Club that the following proposals would be submitted to the Wigan Council Cabinet on the 30th September.

“Tyldesley Pool is a converted Cinema which has limited swimmming and ancillary facilities.  There is a large dilapidated store adjacent to the swimming pool.  The usage of the pool is extremely low in comparison to other pools across the Authority, and due to the age and condition of the premises, the centre has a relatively short life span of 5-7 years.

In order to provide sufficient and sustainable pool facilites in the East of the Borough, it is proposed that a new public swimming pool is built on the Leigh Sport Villlage site, and is linked to the sports hall and other leisure facilities.  The combination of the pool, the sports hall and fitness suite under one roof would provide a first class range of wet and dry sports facilities for local communities in the East of the Borough.

When these facilities are open to the public (circa January 2007) it is proposed that Tyldesley pool should close and the existing customer base is re-located to Howe Bridge Sports centre and Leigh Sports Village.

It is proposed that Atherton baths should close no later than December 2004, and that the revenue savings from Atherton baths be used to support free junior swimming (all year round) for all children across the Borough from 1st April 2005”.

Atherton Swimming Club has been advised that pool time at Tyldesley will be available to them if they so which, and they have until 7th October to respond.

To accommodate other users from Atherton it will most likely entail slight changes to our own session timetable, commencing January 2005.  However, until further information is received from Atherton Swimming Club and the Trust the Management Committee of Tyldesley Swimming Club is unable to give any further detailed information, but as soon as this is available the members will be informed.

An assurance given by the Trust that if the baths is closed Tyldesley will be given priority to re-locate to the new pool, and be given first refusal for times suitable for the continued running of our Club.

For your information it is proposed that the new Leigh pool will be financed by the closure/re-location of the Wigan Pier Heritage site.

Plans for the development of the Wigan Pool site will be submitted during December 2004 and the outcome will be clearer in April 2005.

If parents wish further information and feel a full meeting of members will be beneficial they should submit their names to Mavis Bent (01942 876600) or Gwyn Pierce (01942 605035)

THE PRESIDENT AND MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE WISH TO REASSURE ALL MEMBERS THAT THEY WILL BE KEPT INFORMED OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
