Mavis became involved with Tyldesley Swimming and Water Polo Club in 1973 when she was advised to take her son Colin swimming to help overcome a medical problem. Colin as a matter of interest later represented England in water polo.

In 1978 she became involved in water polo assisting the development of the senior water polo team a role she maintains today. In 1987 the senior team entered Division 4 of the National League and one of her proudest moments was in 1998 when Tyldesley were the National League Division 2 Champions and were promoted to Division 1.

In 1987 Mavis produced a development plan for juniors which was implemented by the Club and from this early plan the club produced an U18's team that won the ASA National Championship, four junior GB internationals and two senior internationals - one presently playing for GB.

Mavis has more recently encouraged others to assist in the development of the club through coaching and officials courses and taken on many roles including team manager, secretary and fund raiser. She now leads the club as President.

In 2001 with an "Awards for All" award she coached beginners from the Wigan Metro area to introduce them to mini polo. She is a qualified assistant water polo coach and is on the list of the ASA water polo desk officials.

In 2002 she was appointed the Water Polo Secretary for Manchester & District and has secured another "Awards for All" award to develop water polo in the Greater Manchester area.

In 2001-2 Wigan Sports Council awarded Mavis their "Lifetime Achievement Award" and in 2002 the North West Sports Board awarded her the runners up award as "Best Volunteer".
