On Sunday
1st April 2001 Tyldesley Swimming and Water Polo Club played their first water polo game at their home pool since 1997 (home
matches were in the interim played at Miles Platting Varley Street pool). The game in the Northern Counties 16/Us league was
against Fleetwood, a team Tyldesley had previously beaten 9-8 at Fleetwood. The game promised to be an exciting one and so
it turned out.
Tyldesley got off to a good start leading 2-0 at the end of the first quarter with both goals being scored by James Gendall.
The second quarter was much more even with goals by Luke Nicholls and David Gendall being matched by two from Fleetwood.
The third quarter saw a slight advantage to Tyldesley with a hat trick by Chris Tickle and a goal by Michael Hardman being
matched by three goals from Fleetwood.
The final quarter again saw Tyldesley on top with goals by James Gendall, Khalid Jhugroo and Chris Tickle being matched
with just one goal from Fleetwood. Final score Tyldesley 11 – Fleetwood 6.
It was nice to see spectators on the balcony who supported their team with many oohs and aahs giving the game plenty of
atmosphere.
